Vasyl Lomachenko Possible Opponent for Gervonta Davis After Lamont Roach Fight

Sports news » Vasyl Lomachenko Possible Opponent for Gervonta Davis After Lamont Roach Fight

Following Gervonta Davis’s contentious draw with Lamont Roach Jr., discussions have emerged about a potential matchup between Davis and Vasyl Lomachenko, according to boxing reporter Keith Idec.

Davis, with a record of 30 wins, 0 losses, 1 draw, and 28 knockouts, had a challenging fight against Roach last Saturday. Many felt the fight could have been scored a loss for Davis.

Roach, despite two previous amateur defeats to Davis, delivered an impressive performance at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Davis went the distance for only the third time in his professional career, and Roach was arguably denied a significant victory due to a controversial decision by referee Steve Willis.

In the ninth round, Willis started a count when Davis took a knee, but then surprisingly ruled it a no-knockdown, preventing Roach from potentially winning the round 10-8, which could have changed the fight’s outcome.

After the fight, Davis claimed that hair product in his eyes caused a burning sensation, leading him to take a knee.

At the post-fight press conference, Davis hinted that his next opponent was already chosen, despite calls for a rematch with Roach.

It seems the fighter Davis alluded to is Vasyl Lomachenko, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and IBF world lightweight champion with a record of 18 wins, 3 losses, and 12 knockouts. Lomachenko hasn’t fought since his victory over George Kambosos Jr. last May.

“Within about 30 minutes after the Roach fight ended, someone from Gervonta Davis’s team contacted a Top Rank executive to inquire about Vasyl Lomachenko’s availability for his next fight,” Keith Idec mentioned on The Ariel Helwani Show.

“This fight was initially planned for November 2nd of last year at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

“The agreement was nearly finalized, but Lomachenko didn’t agree to it and considered retirement at the time.

“Lomachenko is still unavailable until Top Rank, his promoter, indicates otherwise, so he’s currently not an option for Davis, even though Davis desires the fight.”

Since then, Davis, the WBA lightweight champion, has expressed interest in a rematch with Roach. While Lomachenko’s future plans are uncertain, both a Lomachenko fight and a Roach rematch appear to be possibilities for Davis’s next bout.
