Usman Nurmagomedov Addresses Conor McGregor’s Fixation on Khabib’s Family
More than half a decade has passed since Khabib Nurmagomedov’s victory over Conor McGregor in their UFC lightweight title bout, yet the rivalry persists – primarily from McGregor’s side.
Following Usman Nurmagomedov’s recent win against Paul Hughes at a PFL event in Dubai, Hughes showed respect to Usman and his team, including coach Khabib. Hughes made it clear he didn’t share the offensive remarks previously directed at them, likely referencing McGregor’s frequent insults towards the Nurmagomedov family.
Usman believes McGregor’s obsession stems from his inability to move past his loss to Khabib. “It’s probably because Khabib defeated him soundly,” Usman told reporters. “He’s seeking a rematch, but this defeat will haunt him and his children for life.”
The Bellator lightweight champion suggests that McGregor has tied his entire legacy to the fight with Khabib, which ended unfavorably for him. Since that 2018 loss, McGregor has only fought three times, winning once, and hasn’t competed since 2021 due to a leg injury.
Usman notes that while McGregor struggles with this defeat, Khabib has moved on to become a successful coach, continuing the legacy of his late father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. “Khabib’s legacy continues through his coaching and our family’s achievements in MMA,” Usman stated.
Regarding his own recent fight with Hughes, Usman clarified that he holds no ill will towards the Irish fighter. He explained that the “Dagestan vs. Ireland” narrative was primarily to generate interest in their bout, which successfully filled the arena and drew global attention.
