Featherweight contender Giga Chikadze faced a setback even before stepping into the octagon at UFC Kansas City, missing weight for his scheduled main card bout.
Chikadze weighed in at 147 pounds during Friday`s official weigh-ins for the event taking place on Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri. This was one pound over the 146-pound limit for non-title featherweight fights, which includes the one-pound allowance. His opponent, David Onama, successfully made weight at 146 pounds.
Despite the weight miss, officials have confirmed that the fight between Chikadze and Onama will proceed as a catchweight contest. As a penalty for failing to make weight, Chikadze will forfeit 20 percent of his fight purse to his opponent.
Most other fighters on the card successfully made their required weights without issue. In the main event, welterweight headliners Ian Machado Garry and Carlos Prates both came in within the limit, weighing 171 pounds and 170 pounds respectively for their clash.
The co-main event participants, Anthony Smith and Zhang Mingyang, also hit their marks for their light heavyweight bout, both weighing in at 206 pounds.
