Sam Gilley To Face Ishmael Davis For British Title

Ishmael Davis, known for stepping in on short notice, appears set for another significant opportunity. Following the withdrawal of Louis Greene, reports indicate Davis will now challenge Sam Gilley for the British Super Welterweight title.

This newly arranged matchup, which is also generating considerable interest, has reportedly received approval from the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC). This keeps the vacant 154lb Lonsdale Belt available to be contested, although an official announcement regarding the fight is still anticipated.

It seems Louis Greene (17-4, 11 KOs), who was originally slated to fight Gilley (18-1, 9 KOs) on June 7th, has withdrawn from the scheduled contest.

Gilley and Greene previously met in a thrilling bout back in 2023. Despite multiple attempts to stage a rematch, it has regrettably not come to fruition.

However, according to the BBBoC’s latest circular, Sam Gilley is still scheduled to fight for the British title. This contest is expected to take place at Portman Road in Ipswich, the home of Ipswich Town Football Club, on the undercard of the Fabio Wardley vs Justis Huni event.

Since his points victory over Greene, the 30-year-old Gilley has only had one fight: a fourth-round stoppage win against Jack McGann. His ring activity has been limited in recent years.

In contrast, Ishmael Davis (13-2, 6 KOs) had a much busier 2024. He began the year with a unanimous decision victory over Troy Williamson.

Despite taking the fight on short notice, `The Black Panther` delivered a determined performance before losing a majority decision to Josh Kelly. He later suffered a sixth-round stoppage defeat to world-level contender Serhii Bohachuk, also after accepting that fight with limited preparation time.

Davis was scheduled to return to the ring earlier this year, but an injury forced him out, leading to Caoimhin Agyarko stepping in to face Ryan Kelly instead.

However, Davis is now expected to resume his role as a reliable short-notice contender, with the anticipated showdown against Sam Gilley appearing likely to proceed.
