Ryan Garcia is now training with Derrick James, a renowned American boxing coach. This change comes after Garcia’s brief time working with Eddy Reynoso, who also trains Canelo Alvarez.
It was unexpected when Garcia, with a record of 24 wins and 1 loss, including 20 knockouts, announced he would train with Reynoso. This meant he would be training alongside Teofimo Lopez, a significant rival.
However, Garcia and Lopez, who were scheduled to both fight on the same event in Times Square, New York on May 2nd, have both stopped training with Reynoso.
This allows Reynoso to fully focus on preparing Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia for their upcoming matches on May 3rd against William Scull and Bruno Surace, respectively.
While Lopez has not yet announced his new trainer, Garcia has publicly stated on social media that Derrick James will be his new coach.
Garcia and James previously worked together in 2023, before Garcia’s fight against Devin Haney last year.
In that fight, Garcia performed strongly, knocking Haney down three times and initially winning by majority decision.
Following this victory, which was later changed to a no-contest, Garcia received a one-year suspension from the New York State Athletic Commission. This was due to testing positive for ostarine, a substance that enhances performance.
With his suspension ending on April 20th, Garcia is now preparing to fight Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, who has a record of 16 wins and 2 losses, with 13 knockouts and has previously challenged for a world title.
In addition to James, Ryan Garcia’s father, Henry Garcia, is expected to play a significant role in his training camp for the upcoming fight.
