Ryan Bader Discusses PFL Departure and Potential UFC Reunion

Sports news » Ryan Bader Discusses PFL Departure and Potential UFC Reunion

Ryan Bader decided it was time for a change. After a year since his last PFL appearance, due to his role in the film “The Smashing Machine,” the Bellator heavyweight champion had a discussion with PFL about parting ways amicably. Despite having one fight remaining on his contract, Bader assures there is no bad blood.

Bader clarified that the decision to leave PFL was primarily his. Considering the acquisition of Bellator and the resulting uncertainty around championships and tournaments, and feeling he had accomplished much already, Bader believed it was the right moment to separate. He expressed satisfaction with the outcome and appreciation for PFL and his time in Bellator.

His sole PFL fight was a defeat against Renan Ferreira in February 2024. Shortly after, he received an unexpected offer to act in “The Smashing Machine,” alongside Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. PFL was supportive, allowing him to film the movie while still under contract. Bader values their understanding and maintains positive relationships with both organizations.

A significant factor in his decision was his current career stage. At 41, Bader is approaching retirement and wasn`t enthusiastic about participating in PFL tournaments. He also considered that potential opponents might be rematches, given his extensive history with top Bellator heavyweights. Tournament purses, with his salary expectations, were also a consideration. The movie project presented perfect timing for a transition, giving him greater control over his future path.

Now a free agent for the first time since 2017, Bader anticipates various options. He left the UFC on good terms and has maintained a positive relationship with them. A return to the UFC for his final fights is a possibility he and his manager have considered – a chance to conclude his career where it began. He also mentioned RIZIN in Japan as an intriguing alternative, given the movie`s setting and Mark Coleman`s legacy there. However, he is not looking for numerous fights, perhaps just one or two as a “farewell.”

Beyond the UFC, RIZIN contacted Bader immediately after his release from PFL, suggesting interesting opportunities. He is open to grappling on UFC Fight Pass, a potential boxing deal, and other “fun” ventures. Bader, a lifelong competitor with a winning mindset, now prioritizes enjoying his remaining fights without the pressure of chasing titles. He has achieved significant milestones and now seeks fulfilling experiences as his career winds down, emphasizing the importance of enjoyable and financially viable opportunities.
