Charles Conwell might have believed he was just one fight away from challenging for a world title, but Jorge Garcia Perez dramatically altered those plans with a surprising victory in California.

Competing on the undercard of Gabriela Fundora`s victory over Marilyn Badillo, Perez maintained relentless pressure, targeting both the head and body of his opponent. This earned him a well-deserved split decision victory, with two judges scoring the bout 115-113 in his favor, while the third favored Conwell with the same score.

“My corner kept encouraging me every round, telling me I was winning and to keep pushing. Thankfully, and thank God, we secured the win,” Perez expressed, responding to Chris Mannix’s inquiry about his confidence in the decision.

Perez highlighted his rigorous training camp as crucial to his victory, enabling him to endure 12 rounds and effectively utilize his experience.

“My preparation and training camp were key. We had an excellent camp, and with each fight, I feel myself improving. I owe this to my family and team; I couldn’t have done it without them. I am incredibly happy,” Perez stated.

“I trained extremely hard because I knew a significant opportunity would arise with a win – a chance at a world title. I believe if I continue to work hard and perform like this, a title fight is within reach. A title is coming my way.”

Conwell, previously undefeated at 21-0, had been expected to face unified champion Sebastian Fundora later this year or in early 2026. This fight was seen as a stepping stone, but Perez turned it into a major setback. Xander Zayas was also mentioned as a potential opponent for Conwell. However, Perez now asserts that he should be the one to seize these opportunities.

“Absolutely, yes. If it’s Sebastian Fundora, bring him on,” the 28-year-old Perez declared through an interpreter.

“If it’s any other champion, they are welcome too. ‘Chino’ Garcia is ready for anyone, anytime.”
