Paddy Pimblett Doubts Ilia Topuria’s Chances for Immediate Lightweight Title Bout
Paddy Pimblett has expressed skepticism regarding Ilia Topuria’s potential to secure an immediate lightweight title fight against Islam Makhachev. Despite Topuria’s recent impressive victories, Pimblett believes the featherweight champion hasn’t yet earned the right to challenge for a second title.
Pimblett stated, “It’s unlikely Topuria will face Makhachev so soon. Typically, a champion needs multiple title defenses before moving up. Topuria lacks the star power of someone like McGregor to justify an immediate title shot in a new weight class.”
The Liverpool native compared the situation to Conor McGregor’s rapid ascent to two-division champion status, noting that Topuria’s popularity, while significant in Spain, doesn’t match McGregor’s global appeal during his prime.
Regarding his own career, Pimblett dismissed rumors about potential matchups with Michael Chandler or Dustin Poirier, advising fans to be cautious about information from unofficial sources. He did, however, express interest in competing at the upcoming UFC event in Miami.
“I’m aiming to fight at UFC 314 in Miami,” Pimblett revealed. “It would be my first time in the city, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity.”
As the lightweight division continues to evolve, Pimblett’s insights offer a pragmatic view of the championship landscape and the factors that influence title opportunities in the UFC.
