Rising UFC star Paddy Pimblett isn`t taking Colby Covington`s recent verbal attack seriously, dismissing the welterweight contender`s remarks.
Following his victory over Michael Chandler at UFC 314, Pimblett was confronted backstage by Covington, who criticized Pimblett`s opponents. Pimblett retorted by mocking Covington`s recent losses.
Pimblett addressed the incident on an ESPN post-fight show, referring to Covington with disdain.
“He`s just seeking attention when cameras are around,” Pimblett stated. “I saw him at Power Slap without cameras, and he avoided eye contact. This time, knowing cameras were present, he approached me. I warned him about involving the police like he did with Masvidal.”
Covington has a mixed record since 2021, with a single win against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272. Masvidal later assaulted Covington, leading to Masvidal`s arrest for battery.
Pimblett, now undefeated in the UFC at 7-0 after his win against Chandler, is prioritizing a lightweight title shot and views Covington as a minor distraction.
“He`s insignificant,” Pimblett declared. “He`s losing fights and trying to use my name to stay relevant. I would easily defeat him, but I`m aiming for bigger achievements.”
Pimblett mentioned top lightweight contenders such as Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, Arman Tsarukyan, Ilia Topuria, and even Conor McGregor as potential future opponents.
“Conor McGregor also placed a bet on Chandler,” Pimblett noted. “Given the Irish connection, if he wants a fight upon his return, I`m ready to face McGregor.”
