UFC lightweight Paddy Pimblett is considering his next steps in the competitive 155-pound division. While he sees a fight with Justin Gaethje as a path to a title shot, Pimblett also recognizes a strategic advantage if his rival, Ilia Topuria, claims the lightweight championship.

Following a dominant victory over Michael Chandler at UFC 314, Pimblett is in a strong position. With Topuria scheduled to challenge Charles Oliveira for the vacant title and other key contenders like Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway booked for the BMF title, Gaethje appears to be a potential next opponent for “The Baddy”.

Speaking to UFC broadcast partner TNT Sports, Pimblett discussed his view on the lightweight landscape and potential matchups.

“Yeah, that’d be nice [to fight Gaethje],” Pimblett stated, but quickly added his alternative perspective. “I was thinking about it the other day: It’s probably better if Ilia wins the belt, because he’ll probably call me out and then I could just fight him. Maybe I wouldn’t even fight Gaethje, [and I could] just fight Topuria.”

He elaborated on why a Topuria victory would be beneficial: “It’d be far better for my career if Ilia wins because I’d, more than likely, be his first title defense.”

Justin Gaethje had been hoping for a title shot himself after defeating Rafael Fiziev, but will now wait as Topuria and Oliveira compete for the belt.

Despite favoring the scenario where Topuria wins the title, Pimblett expressed willingness to face Gaethje to prove his championship readiness. He is confident that defeating Gaethje would solidify his position as the number one contender, regardless of who holds the title. “I know for a fact if I beat Gaethje, I’m next in line [no matter who is champion],” Pimblett asserted.

Pimblett also believes he has the skills to finish Gaethje, citing his recent performance. “After what I just did to Chandler, I think I finish Justin Gaethje.” He noted that securing a fight with Gaethje depends on Gaethje`s willingness, as it would involve him fighting someone ranked below him.
