Nikita Krylov expects to see the Russian flag displayed next to his name when he enters the Octagon to face Dominick Reyes at UFC 314.
The light heavyweight fighter is returning to competition after more than two years and is scheduled to fight this Saturday. In his previous appearance in 2023, no flag was shown on his profile. During a UFC 314 media day on Wednesday, Krylov addressed this situation and explained the reasons behind the previous uncertainty about his represented nation.
“Yes, we discussed it with the UFC. Even in the two events prior, I requested to list Kislovodsk, Russia, as my fighting location,” Krylov stated. “I have been residing there for several years now and believe I am honored to represent them.”
Although Krylov previously lived in Ukraine, he competed representing Donetsk. This region was taken over by Russian forces during the ongoing conflict that began in 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the annexation of four regions, including Donetsk, although the conflict over the area continues.
Krylov believes this situation caused the confusion during his last UFC fight. He now lives exclusively in Russia and intends to represent this nation on Saturday.
“The reason for the absence of a flag next to my name in previous events is because I lived most of my life in Donetsk, Ukraine,” Krylov explained. “Donetsk is a city that is still under dispute, with uncertain belonging.”
“Currently, I believe it is appropriate for me to have Russia next to my name. I am proud to represent Russia.”
Despite his time away, Krylov comes back to the UFC with a three-fight winning streak. His fight against Reyes offers him a chance to quickly re-enter the top ranks of the light heavyweight division.
A victory against Reyes, in the opening fight of the pay-per-view main card on Saturday, could position Krylov for a potential title shot.
