Unified minimumweight champion Oscar Collazo intends to continue his impressive momentum when he faces Mexican contender Edwin Cano on March 29.
The bout will serve as the co-main event for a Golden Boy Promotions event in Cancún, Mexico. William Zepeda will headline the card in a highly anticipated rematch against Tevin Farmer.
Collazo, boasting an undefeated record of 11-0 with 8 knockouts, is coming off a dominant victory over Thammanoon Niyomtrong. In that fight, he knocked Niyomtrong down three times, securing a decisive seventh-round knockout.
This victory allowed the exceptionally talented fighter to add Niyomtrong’s WBA title to his already impressive collection, which includes the WBO and Ring Magazine titles in the 105-pound minimumweight division.
Although currently competing at minimumweight, the 28-year-old Collazo has shown potential to become a significant force in higher weight classes, drawing comparisons to fighters like Jesse Rodriguez and Naoya Inoue.
Boxing legend Miguel Cotto has demonstrated strong belief in Collazo’s potential, promoting the promising Puerto Rican boxer under his promotional company.
His upcoming opponent, Edwin Cano, with a record of 13-2-1 and 4 knockouts, is ranked third by the WBO and eleventh by the WBA. However, Cano has yet to face an opponent with the same caliber as Collazo.
With Cano being 27 years old and fighting on home turf in Mexico, their upcoming bout has the potential to become a classic Puerto Rico versus Mexico boxing rivalry match.
It is anticipated that Collazo will successfully overcome this challenge and then pursue unification fights against IBF champion Pedro Taduran and WBC titleholder Melvin Jerusalem.
Regardless of future plans, “El Pupilo” (The Pupil) is eager to deliver an exciting performance on fight night.
In a press release, Collazo stated, “I am grateful to Miguel Cotto Promotions and Golden Boy for providing me with this opportunity to display my skills in Cancún and engage with diverse fan communities.”
He added, “We will fully capitalize on this chance and once again demonstrate that we are the best in the 105-pound division globally.”
