It`s clear Georgia holds immense affection for Merab Dvalishvili.
On Wednesday, the reigning UFC bantamweight champion returned to his native Georgia and was met by an overwhelming crowd of adoring fans at the airport. This enthusiastic welcome followed Dvalishvili`s dominant performance at UFC 316 last weekend, where he secured an impressive third-round submission victory over Sean O`Malley.
Social media videos captured the scene, showing Dvalishvili immediately surrounded by supporters upon disembarking, marking the start of his triumphant return home.
He then boarded a double-decker bus, with fans on motorcycles excitedly riding alongside, eager to catch a glimpse of their returning hero.
This incredible display highlights Dvalishvili`s increasing fame and the deep pride he inspires by consistently representing Georgia.
Accompanying Dvalishvili was his head coach, John Wood, who spoke about the champion`s unwavering dedication to his fans, noting that Merab will always take time for them, even if it means pausing other activities.
“He really is that guy,” Wood said. “Merab is the nicest, funniest, loving dude. He will sign every autograph, talk to every single person; he loves it. He would attend every event. He never says no.
“I`ve seen him many times; it takes us hours to get places when we`re with him because he`ll jump out of the van and just start signing [autographs] for people on the street corner, and then a crowd gathers, and he won`t turn anyone down.”
This immense welcome in Georgia is a testament to his connection with his homeland, where he will continue celebrating his recent win – the second successful defense of his title, following his victory over Umar Nurmagomedov in January.
