Matt Brown Reveals Concerns for Alex Pereira Ahead of UFC 313

Sports news » Matt Brown Reveals Concerns for Alex Pereira Ahead of UFC 313

UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira’s fame soared in 2024 after three title defenses with brutal knockouts, making him a prominent figure in the sport.

This success has opened doors for Pereira, including a major acting role in Adam Wingard’s new film “Onslaught.” He also traveled to support Sean Strickland at UFC 312 before his own title fight against Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 313.

While Pereira denies distractions, Matt Brown suggests that “Poatan” could be affected by newfound success, a common issue for champions.

“It’s definitely possible [he’s distracted],” Brown stated. He noted that the focus required to reach the top differs from maintaining it. Pereira, now highly popular, faces numerous demands, potentially shifting his mindset. Ankalaev, seen as an underdog, is highly motivated, feeling overlooked and eager for the title shot.

Ankalaev was a top contender before Pereira’s fight with Khalil Rountree Jr., further solidifying his position with a win over Aleksandar Rakic.

Despite initial doubts, the UFC granted Ankalaev the title opportunity against Pereira at UFC 313.

Ankalaev’s size, power, striking, and sambo skills pose a significant challenge for Pereira. Pereira has mostly fought opponents who prefer striking exchanges, but Ankalaev may employ a different strategy.

Brown points out Pereira’s need to address weaknesses. While acknowledging Pereira’s striking achievements, Brown believes he has benefited from favorable matchups, avoiding strong wrestlers or grapplers. To maintain his dominance, Pereira must dedicate time to improving his grappling, similar to his striking development.

Brown emphasizes that facing grappling specialists is inevitable for Pereira. He acknowledges Pereira’s impressive run but suggests his matchups have been advantageous. Brown questions if Pereira can adequately train his weaknesses amidst his busy schedule.

Brown praises Pereira’s MMA transition at 37, making him one of UFC’s oldest champions alongside Jon Jones. Pereira has appeared dominant against fighters like Jamahal Hill and Jiri Prochazka.

However, Brown believes Pereira will eventually face a truly challenging opponent, and any lack of preparation could be detrimental.

“It will be tested at some point,” Brown said, expecting Ankalaev to test Pereira’s weaknesses.

Brown notes Ankalaev’s lack of hype despite his skills. Objectively, Ankalaev is a tough opponent. While Pereira can win with a clean strike, Ankalaev’s hunger and underdog status make him dangerous.

Brown admits this is his biggest concern during Pereira’s light heavyweight run but still leans towards Pereira. He suggests distractions might affect Pereira’s performance, but Ankalaev’s lack of finishing ability could be a disadvantage against Pereira.

“I’m not as confident as I’ve been with Alex in the past,” Brown concludes, citing both distractions and Ankalaev’s skill as reasons for his uncertainty.
