Mark Kerr announced for UFC Hall of Fame Pioneer Wing

Sports news » Mark Kerr announced for UFC Hall of Fame Pioneer Wing

The impact of Mark Kerr`s career endures. During the broadcast of UFC 316 on Saturday, the 56-year-old Kerr was revealed as an upcoming inductee into the UFC Hall of Fame`s Pioneer Wing. The induction ceremony is scheduled for June 28 in Las Vegas. The fighter, a two-time winner of UFC heavyweight tournaments, was present at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., where he viewed a video honoring his career.

This announcement coincides with a period of increased public attention on Kerr, largely due to a biographical film about his life, The Smashing Machine, set for release on October 3, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Kerr.

Further highlighting the connection to the film`s release, it was also confirmed on Saturday that Dwayne Johnson is slated to give Kerr`s induction speech on June 28.

Kerr emerged as a prominent figure during the UFC`s nascent years, securing victories in heavyweight tournaments at UFC 14 and UFC 15 in 1997. True to his reputation, the fighter from Ohio dominated his opponents, finishing all but one of his initial 11 bouts in the opening round. Regrettably, this early dominance proved difficult to sustain; a defeat against Kazuyuki Fujita in 2000 marked the beginning of a decline in his career trajectory.

Following this setback, Kerr achieved only three more wins in his subsequent 13 contests, concluding his career in 2009 with a final record of 15-11 with one no-contest.

Beyond the UFC, Kerr was instrumental in establishing the renowned Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) competitions. The former Division-I wrestling champion won ADCC tournaments in both 1999 and 2000 and was recognized for his contributions by being inducted into the organization`s first Hall of Fame class in 2022.

When Kerr is formally inducted at T-Mobile Arena, he will be recognized alongside other 2025 inductees: Vitor Belfort in the Pioneer Wing; Amanda Nunes and Robbie Lawler in the Modern Wing; the UFC 236 championship bout between Israel Adesanya and Kelvin Gastelum in the Fight Wing; and producer Craig Piligian in the Contributor Wing.

The Pioneer Wing also includes esteemed figures such as Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, and Anderson Silva.
