Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao recently shared his intentions to deliver unexpected moments and serve as an inspiration when he steps back into the ring against Mario Barrios on July 19. During an interview with PBC`s Brian Campbell on the night of the Plant-Resendiz broadcast, the Filipino superstar reiterated his decision to face Barrios following an extended break from the sport.
“I believe fighting with Barrios, we can give a good fight and we can entertain the fans. I mean, that`s pretty sure, because Barrios is a good fighter also, he`s a champion,” stated Pacquiao. His upcoming bout sparks questions about how much capability remains in his seasoned physique.
Pacquiao added, “You know me, I always bring surprises to the fans, like what I did before. I have to train hard and make sure that I`m in a good position in the fight.”
Overcoming Barrios presents a significant opportunity for Pacquiao to defy expectations. Achieving success at over 40 would place him alongside historical figures like Bernard Hopkins, George Foreman, and Archie Moore as notable older fighters. This potential feat, coming just a month after his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, would be a monumental achievement in his remarkable career. His journey continues to be a source of inspiration.
Reflecting on his purpose and recent honour, Pacquiao commented, “That`s what I`m trying to do, to be an inspiration to the young kids and also the people who love boxing. It`s a great honour for me to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. That`s history. I can`t believe it. I can`t imagine in my boxing career I will get in the Hall of Fame.”
