Magomed Ankalaev, the newly crowned UFC light heavyweight champion, is already making waves in the division.
After securing a dominant unanimous decision victory over Alex Pereira at UFC 313 on Saturday to claim the title, Ankalaev quickly took to social media to celebrate his win and address potential future matchups. He acknowledged Pereira’s stature in MMA and didn’t rule out an immediate rematch.
“It was an honor sharing the cage with you, Alex Pereira,” Ankalaev tweeted. “You are a true champion, and your team is top-class. I’m open to a rematch whenever you want.”
Ankalaev also highlighted his striking performance against Pereira, known for his powerful stand-up game. He noted that he intentionally engaged Pereira in striking exchanges for the first three rounds, emphasizing his own capabilities and pressure.
Furthermore, Ankalaev responded to congratulations from UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov on Twitter.
Former light heavyweight champion Jiri Prochazka also entered the conversation, praising Ankalaev’s victory but suggesting Pereira should face him in a trilogy fight. Prochazka hinted at a possible title shot himself, coming off a win against Jamahal Hill at UFC 311. This comment didn’t sit well with Ankalaev.
“I believe you are a fraud, and many others are more deserving than you,” Ankalaev retorted to Prochazka. “You need to earn your way back with some wins.”
“This guy is not a good fighter,” Ankalaev further commented regarding Prochazka in response to a tweet from ESPN MMA.
