Lyoto Machida: Balancing GFL Management with Potential MMA Return
Lyoto Machida, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, has taken on a new role as team manager for São Paulo in the Global Fight League’s inaugural season. However, he hasn’t completely closed the door on his fighting career.
Initially approached to compete, Machida opted for a managerial position, citing his desire to observe the league’s development. He expressed enthusiasm for the GFL’s potential to benefit the sport by providing more opportunities for fighters and coaches.
At 46, Machida’s illustrious career includes victories over numerous MMA legends. While he’s currently focused on his management role, he maintains a training regimen and remains open to the possibility of competing again under the right circumstances.
“I’m not ruling out fighting,” Machida stated. “It’s just not my priority right now. I’m intrigued by this new organization and want to experience it from a managerial perspective first.”
Machida emphasized that any potential return to competition would need to be carefully considered. He’s particularly interested in facing opponents from his own generation, rather than taking on younger fighters in their prime.
“If I were to fight again, it would have to be the right challenge at the right time,” Machida explained. “I’m aware of my place in the sport and what makes sense for me at this stage of my career.”
For now, Machida is excited about his new role in the GFL and the opportunity to contribute to the sport from a different angle. While his fighting future remains uncertain, his passion for MMA continues to drive his involvement in the industry.
