Luis Nery Confronts Kyonosuke Kameda at Heated Press Conference

Luis Nery, the controversial former two-division world champion with a record of 35-2 (27 KOs), is set to face Kyonosuke Kameda, 15-3-2 (9 KOs), in an upcoming bout. The pre-fight press conference took an unexpected turn when Nery, known for his polarizing reputation, particularly in East Asia, attempted to strike Kameda during their face-off.

Nery, seeking redemption after a recent high-profile loss, seems intent on maintaining his controversial image. The Mexican fighter first gained notoriety in Japan in 2017 when he defeated then-unbeaten WBC bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka. However, the victory was tainted by a positive test for a banned substance, leading to a rematch the following year.

The rematch further damaged Nery’s reputation when he missed weight by a significant margin. Despite this, he defeated Yamanaka again, resulting in a lifetime ban from competing in Japan. This ban was only lifted in 2023 for a highly anticipated fight against Naoya Inoue, which Nery lost in six rounds.

Now, Nery is preparing to face Kameda, an undefeated fighter in his last nine bouts, who will be competing outside Japan for the first time. The fight is scheduled for February 22 in Tijuana, Mexico, with former world title challenger Carlos Ocampo also featured on the card.

The press conference incident, captured on video, shows Nery twice attempting to strike Kameda during their face-off, escalating tensions before the fight. This behavior is likely to further cement Nery’s status as a controversial figure in the boxing world, particularly among Asian fans.
