Liam Cameron states that there have been attempts to alter his highly anticipated rematch with Ben Whittaker. The fight was initially planned for 12 rounds, but there`s been a push to reduce it to a 10-round contest.
These two boxers first met in a controversial match last October. In that fight, Ben Whittaker, an Olympic silver medalist with a record of 8-0-1 (5 KOs), faced his first real challenge as a professional boxer.
For the first five rounds of their previous encounter, Whittaker, aged 27, struggled against the relentless pressure from Cameron, 34, whose experience and solid boxing fundamentals proved very effective.
Unexpectedly, both fighters dramatically fell over the top rope in a surprising turn of events during the fight.
Consequently, their bout was declared a technical draw after Whittaker withdrew due to an ankle injury. However, Cameron believes that Whittaker actually quit the fight.
Regardless, these two British light-heavyweight fighters will have a chance to settle their rivalry on April 20. They are headlining a Boxxer event at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, England.
The agreed-upon duration of the rematch – whether it will be 12 or 10 rounds – is still unclear. Cameron has indicated that Whittaker`s team is pushing for the shorter, 10-round option.
“There’s a contract dispute that I’m not allowed to fully discuss publicly, so I’m raising it here,” Cameron mentioned.
“We signed for a 12-round fight, but Whittaker’s team is trying hard to change it to a 10-rounder, doing everything they can. But I am standing firm.”
“When I initially signed the contract for 12 rounds, I thought it was strange, considering he seemed to struggle to last five rounds in our first fight,” Cameron added.
“Then, a couple of weeks later, they tried to send me another contract for 10 rounds. This really shows their confidence level, while I am prepared to go 15 rounds.”
Cameron also mentioned that Frank Warren, his promoter from Queensberry Promotions, is insisting on sticking to the originally agreed terms of the 12-round contract.
In any case, their rematch is expected to be an interesting event on Easter Sunday. Whittaker will be aiming to remind fans of his potential as a future star in boxing.
