Since its establishment in 2012, Legacy Boxing Gym, with locations in Winton, Dorset, and Andover, Hampshire, has risen to prominence in the local boxing community. Founded by Ricki Gayati, the gym has cultivated a reputation for producing talented boxers and its commitment to competition.
Gayati`s personal experiences as a boxer fueled his vision. He dedicates significant time and effort to nurturing the gym into its current successful state, ensuring his boxers are provided with optimal opportunities.
“I always dreamed of opening my own gym,” Gayati stated. “Coming from a small town, the closure of our local gym left a void in the community.”
This experience spurred him to establish a training ground where young boxers could develop and mature, both within the boxing ring and in life. Gayati attributes much of his coaching philosophy and expertise to his training period in Basingstoke.
“Before launching Legacy, I trained under Trevor Francis, a highly experienced and respected coach from Basingstoke, from whom I learned a great deal,” he mentioned. “I’ve always felt like a natural leader and motivator, so coaching felt like a natural progression.”

Legacy Boxing Gym has established a strong presence in amateur boxing, with several athletes aiming to transition to professional careers.
“I anticipate that within three to five years, many of my amateur boxers will be thriving in the professional ranks,” he projected. “I believe our gym`s reputation is constantly growing, thanks to the collective hard work of our team. I also have a couple of amateur boxers who are approaching international level opportunities, through their Jamaican heritage.”
Gayati holds a professional coaching license, enabling him to continue supporting his boxers as they advance from amateur to professional levels.
“As a Pro/Am coach, obtaining my professional license was crucial, allowing me to remain with my amateur boxers as they turn professional,” he clarified. “Many of them naturally aspire to pursue that path, and a few are closer to making that transition than others.”

Gayati encourages his boxers to maximize their amateur experience to learn and develop before prematurely entering the professional scene.
Gayati explained, “Amateur experience is invaluable, and too many young boxers turn professional prematurely. Accumulating a few national titles can significantly enhance your prospects of attracting a major promoter, which is always advantageous.”
“However, some individuals are inherently more suited and prepared for the professional level, even with less amateur experience. While they might seem similar, amateur and professional boxing are often distinct sports.”
Under Gayati’s guidance, Legacy Boxing Gym has evolved into more than just a training facility. It has become a springboard for young athletes and a cornerstone of the Winton community. With a clear vision and increasing recognition, the gym is attracting growing interest, expanding its roster of boxers.
