Lamont Roach Jr. has expressed his lack of surprise, yet disappointment, regarding the New York State Athletic Commission’s decision to uphold the outcome of his bout with Gervonta Davis.
On March 1st, Roach, with a record of 25 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws (10 KOs), paused his reign as WBA Super Featherweight champion to move up to lightweight and challenge Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis for his WBA title. Despite being considered a significant underdog, Roach defied pre-fight expectations and demonstrated he was a formidable opponent for the 29-year-old Davis.
The fight concluded in a majority draw, but significant controversy arose from the ninth round. In this round, Roach appeared to land a punch that caused Davis to briefly take a knee before retreating to his corner to have his face attended to. Referee Steve Willis began administering an eight-count but then stopped, ruling it was not a knockdown.
Davis, with a record of 30 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw (28 KOs), later claimed that grease from his hair had dripped into his eyes, necessitating cleanup.
Judges Glenn Feldman, Eric Marlinski, and Steve Weisfeld scored the fight 114-114, 113-115 (in favor of Davis), and 114-114, respectively. Feldman and Marlinski scored the ninth round 10-9 for Davis, while Weisfeld also gave it to Davis.
On Friday, following a protest from Roach’s team, the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) reviewed the fight but chose to uphold the original result. Consequently, the draw decision was not overturned.
Roach, whose reputation has been significantly enhanced by his performance in the fight, responded to the NYSAC outcome on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “I’m not surprised about the decision by the NYSAC. A little disappointed, yes. Especially when they ACKNOWLEDGED the fact that Steve made the wrong calls in the 9th round. But I wasn’t banking on the overturn. Everyone knows I won the fight and I’m satisfied with that.”
In the post-fight press conference, Davis suggested a rematch would be appropriate but expressed doubt about it happening. However, it is noted that Davis has a rematch clause, potentially offering Roach a second opportunity to secure a victory.
