Kieron Conway Targets European Title Despite George Liddard Agreement

Middleweight boxer Kieron Conway aims to capture the British title, a goal he narrowly missed almost six years ago.

Representing Northampton, he was involved in a tough contest against Ted Cheeseman at 154lbs, an intense battle that ultimately ended in a draw.

This Saturday at the Copper Box Arena in London, Conway (22-3-1, 6 KOs) has another opportunity to claim the vacant British championship when he steps into the ring against Jerome Warburton.

Since his initial attempt for the Lonsdale Belt, ‘Too Class’ has faced challenging opponents including Souleymane Cissokho and Austin Williams and has secured significant victories against domestic rivals.

This extensive experience provides him with a notable edge over Warburton, and Conway expressed strong confidence about his upcoming fight on the undercard of Johnny Fisher vs Dave Allen 2.

He stated, “My past experiences will be crucial; I will simply be better on the night.”

“[Warburton] will undoubtedly give his best. He’s in a position similar to where I was before facing [Cheeseman] – stepping into the spotlight – but I believe I surpass him in every aspect.”

“Bringing this [British title] back to Northampton would feel incredibly rewarding.”

Following the Warburton bout, Conway is widely expected to face George Liddard, who has a British title eliminator fight scheduled on the same card this weekend.

The two fighters, both promoted by Matchroom Boxing, have reportedly reached a tentative agreement to compete against each other later this year.

However, while Conway isn`t concerned about a potential clash with Liddard (11-0, 6 KOs), he also acknowledges that other attractive opportunities might arise.

He commented, “I don’t see it as a risk… if [Matchroom] proposes opponents, I’m ready to take the fights.”

“But I am also the mandatory challenger for the [EBU] European title, so fighting [Liddard] isn`t necessarily my only focus.”

Holding a mandatory position with the EBU middleweight division, Conway could soon be ordered to challenge the second-ranked contender, Etinosa Oliha, for the vacant title previously held by Denzel Bentley.

Regardless of his next move, the 29-year-old hopes to compete three times this year, aiming to overcome a period of inconsistent activity in his career.

Much of this inactivity stemmed from the cancellation of Matchroom’s PrizeFighter event in Japan last year, a tournament where he was considered the favourite.

Furthermore, having previously bypassed chances for the British title, Conway is now determined to maintain his momentum without any further delays.

He explained, “I want to remain active because I’ve been inactive for the past two years, through no fault of my own.”

“Signing contracts for fights like the one in Japan and waiting, or seeing others fight for the British title, has been frustrating. My goal is to have two more fights after this upcoming one [against Warburton].”
