Julia Avila’s Resilient Return: Overcoming Setbacks for UFC Vegas 102

Julia Avila is making her long-awaited return to the UFC after a year-long hiatus, feeling healthier and more prepared than ever before. The bantamweight fighter is set to face Jacqueline Cavalcanti in a preliminary bout at UFC Vegas 102 on Saturday.

Avila’s last appearance in the octagon resulted in a submission loss to former champion Miesha Tate at UFC Austin in December 2023. During that fight, Avila suffered a severe knee injury in addition to a pre-existing condition. Reflecting on the experience, Avila stated, “My pain tolerance and determination are remarkable. I entered that fight already injured, which was a mistake. Within the first few seconds, I completely damaged my right knee, making it impossible to stand properly.”

Following the fight, Avila underwent surgery to repair her ACL, making her “bionic” as she puts it. This marks her second ACL surgery, but unlike the previous time, she didn’t have a child immediately after, allowing for a full recovery. “I’m entering this fight at 100% health, so there are no excuses,” Avila explained.

The 36-year-old fighter acknowledges her stubborn nature but has learned the importance of patience during her recovery. Now, with her confidence restored and health optimal, Avila is eager to compete again.

Avila faces Cavalcanti, who boasts a six-fight winning streak and is undefeated in the UFC. Despite Cavalcanti’s success, Avila feels prepared for the challenge. “She’s an excellent striker with good reach, but I’ve sparred with similar opponents. I’m ready for whatever strategy she employs,” Avila commented.

As she prepares to re-establish herself in the division, Avila sends a clear message: “Don’t underestimate me. This fight will remind everyone of who I am and what I’m capable of achieving.”
