Jon Anik Predicts Alex Pereira’s Potential Middleweight Return After UFC 313

Many anticipate UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira moving up to heavyweight if he triumphs over Magomed Ankalaev this Saturday. However, UFC commentator Jon Anik suggests Pereira may consider a return to the middleweight division instead.

Pereira is set to defend his title against Ankalaev at UFC 313 in Las Vegas. Anik, who has followed Pereira’s impressive career, believes that while a move from light heavyweight is expected, heavyweight might not be the only option.

“It hinges on the fight’s dynamics,” Anik commented. “A dominant victory for Ankalaev might lessen the demand for a rematch, unlike a close contest. Pereira’s popularity and the current scarcity of clear light heavyweight contenders also play a role.”

Anik highlights Pereira’s capability to still compete at middleweight and his expressed interest in fighting Dricus du Plessis. He points out that Pereira never defended his middleweight title and might be keen to reclaim it. Anik doubts Pereira would remain at light heavyweight for long if heavyweight opportunities against champions like Jon Jones or Tom Aspinall are delayed. A move back to middleweight for a Du Plessis fight seems likely.

“Khamzat Chimaev’s plans are a factor,” Anik acknowledges, “but a middleweight return for Pereira isn’t improbable. He’s incredibly disciplined, and his recent comments prioritize a fight with Du Plessis.”

Despite concerns from figures like Daniel Cormier and Matt Brown regarding Pereira’s focus ahead of UFC 313, Anik dismisses these worries. He emphasizes Pereira’s strong work ethic and dedicated team, countering suggestions of distraction.

Anik believes the primary challenge for Pereira is Ankalaev himself, potentially the toughest opponent he has faced in the light heavyweight division. He sees Ankalaev’s skills as the main threat, not any perceived lack of preparation from Pereira.
