Jean Pascal Given WBC Interim Title Opportunity At New Weight

Sports news ยป Jean Pascal Given WBC Interim Title Opportunity At New Weight

Jean Pascal, a former light-heavyweight world champion whose career has unfortunately included multiple failed drug tests, has been presented with a rather surprising opportunity in the cruiserweight division.

Despite not holding a ranking with the World Boxing Council in this weight class, the 42-year-old veteran fighter (37-7-1, 21 KOs) is scheduled to compete for a vacant WBC interim title against the experienced contender Michal Cieslak.

Originally, Michal Cieslak was slated to face Argentina`s Yamil Peralta. The winner of that bout was expected to become the mandatory challenger for the full WBC cruiserweight championship held by Badou Jack.

However, following undisclosed `complications` involving Yamil Peralta, the WBC has instead sanctioned this interim title contest between Pascal and Cieslak.

While a specific fight date has not yet been announced, it appears likely that Pascal, who many observers feel has done little to warrant such a significant title shot, will benefit from fighting on home soil in Canada.

Pascal is no stranger to current WBC champion Badou Jack, having faced him previously. Their exciting clash in 2019, contested at 175 lbs, was a thrilling encounter from start to finish.

Pascal secured a split decision victory in their first meeting, and a rematch was promptly scheduled for 2020.

Tragically, the planned rematch was cancelled after Pascal failed multiple drug tests ahead of the bout, testing positive for prohibited substances including epitrenbolone and drostanolone. This led to a six-month suspension issued by the WBA.

Despite this history of doping violations, Pascal has since returned to active competition. His recent record includes a loss to Michael Eifert, followed by a victory over the less-regarded Terry Osias, paving his way to this unexpected interim title fight against Cieslak.

The fighter who emerges victorious from the Pascal vs. Cieslak interim title fight is widely expected to position himself as the primary challenger for Badou Jack`s title. Badou Jack is currently scheduled to defend his belt against the WBC `champion in recess` Noel Mikaelian on May 3rd.
