Jake Paul`s boxing journey continued with a decision victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at the Honda Center in Anaheim.
Paul, who aims to become a world cruiserweight champion, controlled the majority of the 10-round contest. However, in the final two rounds, Chavez Jr. increased his aggression and landed cleanly on several occasions.
This late surge from the former WBC middleweight champion proved insufficient after a lackluster performance in the preceding eight rounds. Paul managed to keep Chavez Jr. at a distance using his jab and consistently targeted the 39-year-old`s body throughout the fight.
For roughly three-quarters of the bout, Paul primarily pursued Chavez Jr. around the ring. In the closing minutes, Chavez Jr. finally engaged, throwing wild hooks and body shots, some of which connected. Despite this, Paul demonstrated resilience with a solid chin and good stamina, earning a well-deserved unanimous decision victory with scores of 99-91, 97-93, and 98-92.
Addressing the mixed reaction from the crowd during his post-fight interview, Paul stated: “Actions speak louder than words. I`m him. I just kicked your boy’s ass.”
He added, “He’s a tough guy. He’s never been stopped and he’s a Mexican warrior. I’m also a warrior.”
When asked about his performance, Paul boasted: “It was flawless. I think I only got hit 10 times. All he did was survive. Going 10 rounds with a former world champion who’s been in with Canelo and I embarrassed him.”
Paul committed to remaining active and expressed a desire to fight again soon. Predictably, he challenged a variety of fighters significantly more experienced than himself. “I want to be a world champion. ‘Zurdo’ [Ramirez] looked slow and s**t tonight. I want him. I want Badou Jack and Anthony Joshua. I’m staying active and fighting everybody.”
