Jaime Munguia Seeks Redemption Against Bruno Surace on Canelo vs Scull Undercard

The upcoming Canelo Alvarez vs William Scull event in Riyadh on May 3 will feature an exciting super middleweight rematch on its undercard. Jaime Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) will face Bruno Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) in a highly anticipated bout, as reported by ESPN’s Mike Coppinger.

The main event will see Canelo Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs), the unified champion holding three belts, taking on IBF titlist William Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) in a battle for undisputed status at 168 pounds. A victory for Canelo would make him a two-time undisputed champion in the division.

Surace caused a major upset in December 2024 when he knocked out Munguia in the sixth round of their first encounter. The French fighter entered the bout as a significant underdog but managed to land a powerful right hand that sent Munguia to the canvas. The referee stopped the fight due to Munguia’s unsteadiness as he attempted to regain his feet.

This loss marked Munguia’s second defeat in three fights, following his loss to Canelo in May. The Mexican boxer then signed with Top Rank and secured a 10th-round knockout victory against Erik Bazinyan in September.

For Surace, the win over Munguia was a career-defining moment, as he had never previously faced an opponent of that caliber. Despite his impressive victory, the 26-year-old Frenchman is likely to enter the rematch as the underdog once again.

Munguia faces significant pressure in this bout, as another loss would severely impact his standing in the super middleweight rankings and diminish his hopes of becoming a two-weight world champion. His only world title to date was the WBO super welterweight belt, which he won in May 2018.

This rematch promises to be an exciting addition to the Canelo vs Scull undercard, offering both fighters a chance to prove themselves on a global stage.
