Irish Boxer John Cooney Passes Away Following Title Bout

Galway boxer John Cooney has tragically passed away one week after his Celtic super-featherweight title defense against Nathan Howells in Belfast. The 28-year-old fighter suffered his first professional loss when the match was stopped in the ninth round.

After the stoppage, Cooney’s condition rapidly deteriorated despite receiving immediate medical attention and oxygen. He was urgently transported to Royal Victoria Hospital, where it was discovered he had sustained an intracranial hemorrhage. Emergency surgery was performed to alleviate pressure on his brain.

Mark Dunlop of MHD Promotions released a heartbreaking statement: “It is with profound sadness that we announce John Cooney’s passing after a week-long battle for his life. The Cooney family and John’s fiancée Emmaleen extend their gratitude to the Royal Victoria Hospital staff for their tireless efforts and to everyone who offered support and prayers.”

The statement continued, “John was a beloved son, brother, and partner. His special presence in our lives will be remembered forever. Rest in peace, John ‘The Kid’ Cooney.”

The boxing community and fans alike are mourning the loss of this promising young athlete, whose life was cut tragically short following his passion for the sport.
