Ilia Topuria Suggests ‘Easiest Path’ for Paddy Pimblett’s Title Shot

UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria is setting his sights on the lightweight division, anticipating capturing the title at UFC 317. As he prepares for his second fight at 155 pounds against Charles Oliveira in the main event, Topuria is already considering future opponents, with a potential clash against Paddy Pimblett high on his list.

The rivalry between Topuria and Pimblett, sparked by a physical altercation years ago, has intensified over time. Topuria has made it clear he`d like Pimblett to be his first title defense if he becomes champion and has even outlined how the outspoken British fighter could best position himself for that opportunity.

“If he wants to assure his title [shot], he has to fight with Justin Gaethje,” Topuria stated during a recent media day. He explained his reasoning, believing Gaethje presents a better stylistic matchup for Pimblett compared to Arman Tsarukyan. “Because if he fights with Arman, I think Arman’s going to beat him. So the easiest path he has to get the title shot is Justin. Stylistically.”

Arman Tsarukyan, who is serving as a backup for the UFC 317 headliner and has also exchanged verbal jabs with Topuria, was previously slated to fight Islam Makhachev for the title but withdrew due to injury. UFC CEO Dana White has since insisted that Tsarukyan needs a win before receiving another title shot, although his next fight hasn`t been announced.

Meanwhile, Justin Gaethje has indicated his intention to wait for the outcome of the Topuria vs. Oliveira fight, which might make a bout against Pimblett less appealing for him. Despite Gaethje`s potential lack of interest, Topuria remains focused on Pimblett, especially after Pimblett`s recent dominant victory over former title challenger Michael Chandler. The existing animosity between the two fighters further heightens the anticipation for a potential matchup.

Reflecting on the potential fight, Topuria commented, “That fight easily could be one of the biggest in the UFC history.” He added, “Listen, I don’t [take anything] personal in this game. It’s all professional.”

Before he can fully turn his attention to future opponents, Topuria must first overcome the significant challenge posed by Charles Oliveira at UFC 317.

Topuria has confidently predicted a dominant performance against Oliveira, expecting to finish him similarly to how he defeated Alexander Volkanovski (note: Topuria has defeated Volkanovski; the source text also mentioned Max Holloway in this context, but Topuria has not fought Holloway). Oliveira, upon hearing Topuria`s comments, promised to adopt a similarly aggressive strategy, a plan Topuria says he welcomes, while emphasizing that Oliveira will only “try” to execute it, acknowledging Oliveira`s necessary confidence.
