The International Boxing Federation (IBF) is preparing to officially order its super-welterweight world champion, Bakhram Murtazaliev, to commence negotiations for a significant title defense against mandatory challenger Erickson Lubin.
Murtazaliev initially secured the IBF belt following an impressive 11th-round technical knockout victory over Jack Culcay. He then made a strong statement in his first title defense, overpowering Tim Tszyu in just three rounds last October. This dominant performance solidified the 32-year-old Russian`s reputation as a formidable force in the 154-pound division, boasting a record of 23 wins (17 by knockout) with no defeats.
Now, it is expected that Murtazaliev will be directed to negotiate with Lubin (27 wins, 2 losses, 19 KOs). The IBF has reportedly informed Boxing News that the negotiation period is set to begin shortly, allowing both camps the standard 30 days, as per the IBF`s regulations, to reach an agreement for the potential showdown.
Erickson Lubin recently earned his mandatory challenger status by revitalizing his career with an 11th-round stoppage win against Ardreal Holmes Jr. His dominant performance just last Saturday demonstrated that the 29-year-old is back in top form, appearing sharp despite returning from a 20-month layoff.
While past stoppage defeats against Jermell Charlo and Sebastian Fundora remain part of his history, “The Hammer” Lubin has evolved into a resilient and experienced contender at the world level. A potential clash between these two aggressive, fan-friendly punchers promises action from the opening bell.
Both sides will have until June 13th to finalize the agreement before the fight could potentially go to purse bids.
