The upcoming UFC Kansas City event on April 26th has a new main event: a welterweight clash between Ian Machado Garry and Carlos Prates.
UFC announced this new fight on Tuesday, without explaining why the original main event featuring Jamahal Hill and Khalil Rountree was cancelled.
Despite the cancellation of the Hill vs. Rountree fight, the UFC quickly arranged a new headlining bout.
Garry is stepping into this fight after a tough, closely contested match against Shavkat Rakhmonov last December, which was considered a welterweight title contender eliminator. Although Garry lost that fight on points, he gave Rakhmonov his hardest fight yet. Now, he has an opportunity to get back on track against a rapidly emerging talent in the division.
Prates enters this fight with a perfect record of 4 wins and no losses in the UFC, all of which have been finishes by knockout in either the first or second round. He was initially set to fight Geoff Neal at UFC 314, but Neal had to withdraw due to injury.
Instead of finding a replacement opponent for UFC 314, the UFC moved Prates to the main event spot in Kansas City, where he will now face Garry.
The Garry vs. Prates fight will headline the UFC Kansas City event on April 26th. Other notable fights on the card include Anthony Smith`s retirement fight against Zhang Mingyang and a featherweight bout between Giga Chikadze and David Onama.
