Ian Machado Garry is confident he will end the hype surrounding Carlos Prates at UFC Kansas City.
“The Future,” Garry`s nickname, will headline the event on April 26 in a welterweight fight against the quickly rising Carlos Prates. Prates has had a remarkable start in the UFC, winning his first four fights by knockout, earning Performance of the Night bonuses each time. He is currently on an 11-fight winning streak as he prepares to face Garry, who is ranked No. 6.
However, Garry is not impressed. In a recently released video clip, Garry is shown criticizing one of Prates’ previous losses, calling him a “quitter.”
“This video shows Carlos Prates and his true fighting spirit,” Garry stated. “It’s called being a quitter.”
“He had been getting beaten up in the earlier parts of the fight,” Garry continued. “He raises his hand, shakes his head, says, ‘I’m done,’ and then just falls to the ground in despair because he knows deep down he isn`t a true fighter.”
The fight Garry is referring to is Prates` defeat against Mikhail Romanchuk in January 2017 at an event in China.
Garry is mistaken about “rounds prior” because the fight ended just over two minutes into the first round. However, things were going poorly for Prates. Romanchuk came out aggressively, constantly attacking Prates, who was on defense for the entire fight. A flurry of heavy punches against the cage led to the TKO finish.
Since that loss, Prates has won 14 of his next 15 fights, with only one win going to a decision. It`s also worth noting that five of Prates’ six career losses have been by knockout or submission in the first round. His last two victories were against experienced fighters Neil Magny and Li Jingliang, and this upcoming fight is Prates’ first opportunity to break into the top 10 of the highly competitive welterweight division.
Garry, with a record of 15-1, is coming off the first loss of his professional career. He took a fight on short notice against undefeated contender Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 last December and lost by unanimous decision in a competitive three-round fight. Before that, Garry had won his first eight UFC fights.
Prates recently responded on Instagram.
“We are training here, while Ian Garry is talking trash online. You have too much free time…On the 26th, I will punch you in the mouth… Asshole,” Prates said.
