Sports news ยป Gruesome Cut Ends Anthony Smith’s Career in Retirement Fight Loss to Zhang Mingyang at UFC Kansas City

Anthony Smith, a veteran of the sport, experienced the harsh reality of mixed martial arts in his final professional bout. His retirement fight at UFC Kansas City unfortunately ended prematurely after he suffered a severe cut early in the match against Zhang Mingyang. Zhang ultimately secured the victory via strikes in the co-main event.

It had been widely publicized that this would be Smith`s last fight regardless of the outcome. While Smith initially found some success with elbow strikes, Zhang landed an elbow that opened a significant gash on the top of Smith`s head, drastically changing the course of the fight.

With blood obstructing his vision, Smith attempted a takedown that proved unsuccessful. Capitalizing on the moment, Zhang unleashed a barrage of elbows, prompting referee Jason Herzog to stop the contest at 4:03 of the opening round.

Following the stoppage, an emotional Smith addressed the crowd, giving credit to Zhang for his performance.

“I felt alright, but once I got clipped with that elbow, it was bleeding into my eyes,” Smith commented. He added, “He`s very good in the clinch. Look, five years ago, that`s a guy I beat. But I`m getting older, it is what it is. Father Time won tonight. He`s incredibly skilled and has huge potential. I`m excited to watch his career develop.”

Though the result wasn`t what he hoped for, Smith accepted that it was time to conclude his career. He took a moment to absorb the appreciation from the enthusiastic crowd. The UFC also paid tribute to Smith, showcasing highlights from his extensive 50-fight career spanning over 17 years.

“When I began in this sport, I was homeless and had nothing,” Smith shared. “This platform has allowed me to support my family, my four wonderful daughters, and give them a life I never had. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all immensely.”

He continued, “I`m honestly speechless. Watching that tribute video, I realized, I actually did all that! I`m going to follow Chael [Sonnen]`s advice and just be thankful it happened. I appreciate you all. We can be sad next week; tonight, I`m focusing on gratitude.”

While the spotlight was deservedly on Smith`s retirement, Zhang Mingyang celebrated the most significant win of his young career. The victory improved his UFC record to a perfect 3-0, with all three wins coming by first-round finish.

Finishing a respected veteran like Smith positions Zhang for more prominent fights as he continues his ascent in the light heavyweight division.

“Boo me again, come on, let me hear it!” Zhang challenged the audience during his post-fight interview. “I know you didn`t know who I was, but if you didn`t know, now you know!”
