Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez to Face Cuban Boxer Yuniel Dorticos on Jake Paul Undercard

Sports news » Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez to Face Cuban Boxer Yuniel Dorticos on Jake Paul Undercard

Unified cruiserweight world champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez is set to return to the boxing ring on June 28th. He will defend his WBA mandatory title against Yuniel Dorticos. This exciting match will be the co-main event for the highly anticipated Jake Paul versus Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight, taking place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Ramirez`s upcoming fight follows another significant cruiserweight title defense. IBF champion Jai Opetaia is scheduled to defend his title against Claudio Squeo in Australia twenty days prior. Should both Ramirez and Opetaia emerge victorious in their respective bouts, boxing enthusiasts can expect to see calls for a unification clash between these top-ranked cruiserweights later in the year.

In his last fight in November, Ramirez, boasting a record of 47 wins, 1 loss, and 30 knockouts, delivered a dominant performance. He defeated Chris Billam-Smith in Riyadh, taking the WBO title. Despite a competitive start, Ramirez took control in the later rounds, securing a unanimous decision victory.

Yuniel Dorticos, with a record of 27 wins, 2 losses, and 25 knockouts, is five years older than Billam-Smith. He has been less active, fighting only three times since his loss to Mairis Briedis in 2020. In 2018, Dorticos experienced a stoppage loss in the 11th round against Murat Gassiev in a thrilling world title fight.

In a press release from Golden Boy Promotions, Ramirez discussed his ambitions in the cruiserweight division.

“I am thrilled to be back in the ring this June to defend my WBA and WBO titles. This fight is my WBA mandatory defense, and I understand that I must overcome this challenge to stay on course towards achieving greatness and ultimately becoming the undisputed champion.”

“My training has been continuous, and I feel sharper than ever as I progress and mature in this sport. My objective remains the same. I am completely focused, and I am honored to be part of this event alongside Jake Paul and my good friend Julio César Chávez Jr. I want to express my sincere gratitude to my team, Golden Boy Promotions, MVP, the WBA, the WBO, and all my fans. I am looking forward to delivering a memorable performance for you all.”

Dorticos, a former WBA and IBF titleholder known for his 25 knockout victories out of 27 wins, may not possess the same level of boxing skill as Ramirez. However, he represents a significant threat due to his considerable punching power.

“I want to thank MVP, my promoters, and Golden Boy for providing me with this opportunity,” said Dorticos.

“My goal is to become a three-time world champion, and this fight against Zurdo Ramirez gives me the chance to achieve my aspirations on Saturday, June 28th.”
