Ryan Garcia is looking to start fresh and prove he has entered a new phase in his career.
Despite being a popular figure in boxing, Garcia faced a difficult year in 2024. Leading up to his match with Devin Haney in April, several incidents raised concerns about his mental well-being. These included missing weight for the Haney fight and drinking beer during their final face-off. Although Garcia achieved a surprising victory over Haney, the result was later changed to a no-contest due to a positive drug test.
Garcia was suspended for a year due to the failed drug test. He is now set to return to the ring on May 2 against Rolly Romero as the main event in New York City’s Times Square. At a press conference for the “Fatal Fury” event, Garcia stated that he will be on his best behavior this time.
“I aspire to greatness,” Garcia stated. “I have always wanted to compete against the best boxers. Regarding my personal struggles outside of boxing, they have always been present. I believe many others face similar challenges.
“I want to demonstrate that anyone can recover from setbacks. I am committed to showing my dedication to boxing and acting as a true professional. I acknowledge my mistakes and do not want anyone to view my actions of drinking and smoking before my previous fight as acceptable professional conduct. I am here to change perceptions. This fight is my opportunity to earn back respect and prove that my victory was not a fluke. I am prepared to do just that.”
Devin Haney, Garcia’s rival, will also be fighting on the same card against Jose Ramirez in the co-main event. Both fighters have indicated that if they both win, a rematch of their previous fight will be scheduled for later in the year.
