Gabriela Fundora marked her first headline event in spectacular fashion by achieving a seventh-round stoppage against Mexican boxer Marilyn Badillo. The flyweight title fight took place at the Frontwave Arena in California, as part of a Golden Boy Promotions event.
Fundora successfully defended her undisputed champion status, retaining all four major belts (WBC, IBF, WBA, and WBO). `Sweet Poison`, now with a record of 16 wins and no losses (8 KOs), proved too formidable for Badillo, whose record now stands at 19-1-1 (3 KOs). Badillo, who lacked prior experience at this high level of competition, struggled to contend with Fundora`s dominance.
Utilizing her powerful jab, Fundora consistently landed strong punches as her smaller opponent attempted to evade her attacks through bobbing, weaving, and ducking. Badillo`s challenge became even more difficult when a noticeable bump developed on her head, presenting an additional target for Gabriela`s strikes.
A forceful right-left combination from Fundora, delivered as Badillo was positioned against the ropes, connected decisively, causing Badillo to collapse onto the canvas. Although Badillo rose to her feet, she shook her head, signaling to referee Rudy Barragan that she could not continue. The referee stopped the fight at 1 minute and 44 seconds of the seventh round. Fundora then celebrated her significant victory.
“I am ready to pursue more titles in different weight divisions,” Fundora declared in her post-fight interview.
A move upwards from the 112-pound flyweight division appears to be the logical next step for Fundora. Having already established dominance in her current weight class, with limited apparent challengers, advancing to a higher weight category seems to be her anticipated trajectory. Her team and promoters will now strategize a path to continued success.
