Queensberry Promotions head Frank Warren has hinted at a major boxing card set for this August, with one specific potential fight remaining high on his wish list.
Warren and fellow promoter Eddie Hearn, who have recently collaborated while maintaining their competitive dynamic, previously matched their promotional stables against each other in a thrilling 5v5 event last year.
In that initial showdown, Warren`s Queensberry team secured a decisive shutout victory over Team Matchroom, which was captained by heavyweight Deontay Wilder, in a surprisingly one-sided affair.
Now, it seems Hearn might soon get an opportunity for revenge, as discussions continue to build momentum for a potential second 5v5 event.
When questioned about the likelihood of a sequel, Warren confirmed: “We’re doing a big show in August.”
While remaining guarded about specific details, the veteran promoter showed clear enthusiasm when discussing a potential bout between Joe Cordina and Sam Noakes.
“I love that fight; I would do that fight in a heartbeat,” Warren stated emphatically.
Former world champion Joe Cordina, although no longer exclusively fighting under the Matchroom banner, could easily be included in the event, similar to how Wilder was drafted, to ensure a highly anticipated clash.
Cordina, aged 33, has experienced a frustrating period in his career recently, including a planned world title opportunity against Shakur Stevenson being canceled last year.
As a result, the Welshman, now competing at 135 lbs (lightweight), has not been in action since his eighth-round stoppage defeat to Anthony Cacace last May.
Meanwhile, Sam Noakes is scheduled to fight Patrik Balaz on May 10, appearing on the undercard of the super-featherweight title bout between Anthony Cacace and Leigh Wood.
However, with his upcoming May fight appearing to be primarily a tune-up, the 28-year-old Noakes would likely be perfectly positioned for a compelling matchup against Cordina in August.
