Nick Ball`s promoter, Frank Warren, has refuted recent online speculation suggesting the WBA featherweight champion`s next title defense would be against Luis Nery.
Warren stated that the fight is “not happening,” contrary to reports that indicated a potential August date for the bout.
The rumored matchup was reportedly planned for the undercard of a scheduled August 16 event in Saudi Arabia, which was set to feature Teofimo Lopez vs. Devin Haney in a 145lb catchweight contest. However, the main event itself is now also reportedly off.
Despite reports from sources like ESPN`s Salvador Rodriguez on social media platform X reaffirming the possibility, Warren`s clear denial leaves fans of the undefeated Ball (22-0-1, 13 KOs) awaiting news on his actual next opponent.
Earlier, Warren had revealed that a “big fight” announcement was anticipated for the Liverpool native. Attention is also heavily focused on unified super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue, and Warren expressed a strong desire for Ball to challenge `The Monster`.
Commenting on a potential clash, Warren said, “I like Nick in the fight [against Inoue]… He`s a quality, quality fighter.” He highlighted Inoue`s resilience, noting that true fighters can recover from being knocked down.
Warren added that preliminary discussions with Inoue`s team have taken place. He indicated they are open to the fight, provided both Ball and Inoue successfully navigate their respective upcoming bouts.
At 28 years old, Ball is a rising star in British boxing. He bounced back from a draw against Rey Vargas in March 2024 to claim his world title by defeating Raymond Ford three months later. Prior to his title challenges, he delivered dominant performances against Ronny Rios and TJ Doheny in Liverpool. Fans are hopeful that tougher challenges await him in the near future.
