Former UFC champion Francis Ngannou issued a statement on Tuesday regarding his involvement in a fatal motorcycle accident in his native Cameroon. The incident tragically resulted in the death of a 17-year-old girl who succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision.
The accident reportedly occurred over the Easter weekend in the Omnisports district of Yaounde, Cameroon. Reports suggest Ngannou was driving a motorcycle that collided with the young woman. While exact details of the crash are still forthcoming, the victim suffered injuries to her arm and leg. Ngannou is reported to have promptly transported her to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.
Despite efforts to save her, the young woman sadly passed away at Yaounde General Hospital.
In a statement provided to TMZ Sports, Ngannou expressed his profound grief and support for the victim`s family. “From the very beginning, I have been by the family’s side, offering support, comfort, and deepest condolences during this time,” Ngannou stated. He added that he has met with them privately to share in their sorrow and pledged his ongoing support. “I carry their pain with me, and my unwavering thoughts and support remain with them as they face this heartbreaking loss,” he concluded.
Authorities in Cameroon are currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
Ngannou, aged 38, recently returned to mixed martial arts competition in October, making his PFL debut with a dominant first-round victory over Renan Ferreira, his first MMA bout in more than two years. Prior to this return, Ngannou transitioned to boxing, participating in high-profile matches against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua following his departure from the UFC.
This incident follows another recent personal tragedy for Ngannou, who revealed in April 2024 that his 15-month-old son had passed away suddenly.
