Popular former UFC contender Molly McCann is transitioning into the world of professional boxing. Matchroom Boxing formally announced on Thursday that they have added “Meatball” McCann to their roster. The specifics regarding her inaugural opponent and the date of her debut fight are still to be determined.
Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn expressed considerable excitement about welcoming McCann to the promotion. He highlighted her established background as an Amateur Boxing Association champion and the substantial global fanbase she built throughout her successful tenure in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Hearn commented that, in his opinion, this move was “about time” and conveyed his eagerness to embark on this new venture with her.
The 35-year-old Liverpudlian competitor recently declared her retirement from mixed martial arts this past March, following a first-round submission defeat. McCann enjoyed a notable career in MMA, notably capturing the Cage Warriors flyweight title in 2018 before making the step up to the UFC.
Inside the UFC octagon, McCann became a fan favourite, especially in the UK, known for her thrilling performances and highlight-reel knockouts. She experienced a strong period between 2019 and 2022, compiling a 6-2 record that brought her into contention within the flyweight division. However, her time in the UFC concluded with a challenging phase, registering a 1-4 record in her final bouts, including three first-round submission losses, which ultimately prompted her decision to retire from the sport and explore new avenues.
