Former Spanish FA Chief Testifies on World Cup Kiss Incident

Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation, reaffirmed in court on Tuesday that forward Jennifer Hermoso consented to the kiss during the 2023 Women’s World Cup final award ceremony. This statement contradicts Hermoso’s earlier testimony.

Rubiales faces charges of sexual assault and coercion for allegedly attempting to downplay the incident, which overshadowed Spain’s first World Cup victory. He insists, “I asked for permission to give her a small kiss, and she agreed. I’m absolutely certain [she consented].”

The trial also heard from a lip-reading expert who confirmed that Rubiales asked Hermoso, “May I give you a little kiss?” Video evidence was presented showing Hermoso celebrating and later discussing the kiss.

In audio recordings from shortly after the final, Hermoso was heard saying, “It was unexpected, but it doesn’t matter. We’re world champions, that’s what’s important.” She added, “I didn’t like it, but it was just part of the moment. It won’t become anything more than that.”

The defense presented video footage of Rubiales apologizing to the team for the repercussions of the kiss, with Hermoso seen laughing in response. They also challenged previous testimony from Hermoso’s brother regarding alleged pressure to downplay the incident.

Hermoso later testified that she “felt disrespected” by Rubiales and that the kiss “tainted one of the happiest days of my life.” The incident has sparked a broader debate about sexism in sports and society in Spain.

Prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Rubiales, along with fines and a ban from working in sports. The trial continues with testimonies from other defendants, including former national team coach Jorge Vilda.
