FA Cup Introduces Semi-Automated Offside Technology
In a groundbreaking move for English football, the FA Cup fifth round will feature semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) alongside VAR. This marks the first use of such technology in competitive matches in England.
Seven of the eight ties scheduled for March 1-2 will utilize this system, which aims to enhance the speed and accuracy of offside calls. The technology will be implemented at Premier League venues hosting these matches.
SAOT has undergone testing over the past two seasons and assists officials in placing virtual offside lines for close calls, using player tracking data. It also generates virtual graphics for in-stadium and at-home viewers.
The Premier League had initially planned to introduce SAOT earlier this season but faced delays. If successful in the FA Cup, it could still be implemented in Premier League matches this season.
How SAOT Works
The system employs tracking cameras to help match officials make quicker and more accurate offside decisions. These cameras will be installed in every Premier League stadium, tracking the ball and thousands of data points for each player.
During key moments like goals or penalties, the technology analyzes these data points to determine if any attacking player was offside. If an offside position is detected, an alert is sent to VAR officials for verification.
Graphics will be made available to broadcasters and displayed on stadium screens, providing increased transparency for fans.
Expected Impact
The Premier League anticipates that SAOT will accelerate offside decisions by over 30 seconds on average. However, they caution that delays may still occur in complex situations requiring VAR or on-field referee intervention.
While similar technology was used in the 2022 World Cup, the Premier League has developed its own system, which they believe will be more accurate and future-proof.
As the technology debuts in the FA Cup fifth round, its performance will be closely monitored, potentially paving the way for wider implementation in English football.
