President Donald Trump, a known UFC fan, showed his interest even during a meeting with Ireland’s leader.
On Wednesday, Trump met with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin as part of St. Patrick’s Day events. While they discussed trade and tariffs, the UFC was also a topic for President Trump.
Speaking to reporters, Trump praised former UFC champion Conor McGregor and expressed admiration for Irish fighters in general.
Trump mentioned liking McGregor, commenting on his tattoos. He called McGregor “great” and noted Ireland’s history of producing excellent fighters, attributing it to Irish people being tough, smart, and passionate.
McGregor has long supported Trump, even attending his inauguration earlier this year after Trump’s second presidential win in 2024. McGregor had previously celebrated Trump’s initial 2016 election and his 2024 win.
Trump’s praise for McGregor came after he had previously mentioned Khabib Nurmagomedov as his “favorite fighter” before the November election, during discussions about Ukraine and Russia.
McGregor had disagreed with Trump’s pick of Khabib, calling it “abysmal.” However, McGregor still attended Trump’s inauguration with UFC CEO Dana White, champion Jon Jones, and personalities like Jake and Logan Paul.
