Dillian Whyte Joins Wardley-Huni Undercard for June 7 Bout

Sports news » Dillian Whyte Joins Wardley-Huni Undercard for June 7 Bout

Following the cancellation of his anticipated bout against Joe Joyce, Dillian Whyte is scheduled to step back into the ring on June 7. His return fight will be part of the undercard supporting Fabio Wardley`s clash with Justis Huni.

The event on June 7, held at Portman Road, home of Ipswich Town FC, will mark Whyte`s first competitive fight of 2025. His last appearance was in December 2024, where he secured a seventh-round victory against Ebenezer Tetteh, who retired during the fight.

The 37-year-old Whyte was initially slated to face Joe Joyce on April 5 in Manchester, an event intended to launch Queensberry Promotions` partnership with DAZN. However, he withdrew about a month before the date, citing a significant finger injury. Joe Joyce proceeded to fight Filip Hrgovic instead, losing by decision over ten rounds.

The upcoming June 7 event represents a shift in roles for Whyte and Wardley. In the past, Wardley, who is managed by Whyte and Michael Ofoh, frequently appeared on Whyte`s undercard events. Now, Whyte will be fighting in a supporting capacity on Wardley`s card. Whyte`s opponent for the fight is yet to be announced.

During the press conference for the Wardley vs. Huni fight (where Justis Huni stepped in after Jarrell Miller withdrew due to a shoulder injury), Whyte provided details about the injury that caused his withdrawal from the Joyce bout.

“I was preparing for April 5 when I had a gym accident and cut my finger right to the bone, making it impossible to form a fist,” Whyte stated. “I still wanted to fight, though. I didn`t tell my team at first, but a sparring partner let them know. I went to the hospital and got it stitched up.”

Known as `The Bodysnatcher`, Whyte expressed his eagerness to support Fabio Wardley on what will be a significant night for the Ipswich fighter.

“For many of my fights, Fabio was there supporting me, often as the chief support,” Whyte remarked. “It`s funny how things turn out – now I`m here supporting him for his big night. I`m genuinely happy about that.”

Despite never capturing a world title, Whyte, holding a record of 31 wins and 3 losses with 21 knockouts, has faced numerous prominent fighters in modern boxing, including Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Joseph Parker, and Derek Chisora. The London-based fighter, originally from Jamaica, is keen to return to competing against top-ranked opposition.

“I want to fight the best possible opponents I can get,” he stated. “The rivalry between me and AJ feels like it will last a lifetime. There`s Parker, there`s Hrgovic, Wilder is coming back. I just want to fight the best.”

Whyte`s addition joins an undercard lineup for June 7 that already includes bouts such as Sam Gilley vs. Louis Greene, Pierce O’Leary vs. Liam Dillon, and Mike Perez vs. Steven Ward.
