Following the UFC 313 main event, UFC CEO Dana White addressed the light heavyweight title fight between Magomed Ankalaev and Alex Pereira. Ankalaev secured a unanimous decision victory, but White’s reaction to the fight and the scoring was noteworthy.
White admitted he wasn’t overly impressed with the fight’s excitement level. However, he stated he didn’t believe the judges’ decision was incorrect. He pointed out that Ankalaev’s near knockdown in the second round, consistent pressure, and use of clinches against the cage were key to his win.
“It wasn’t what I anticipated,” White commented at the post-fight press conference. He had expected more striking exchanges and takedown attempts.
“I thought Ankalaev won. The decision wasn’t surprising to me,” White added, confirming his agreement with the judges.
Despite acknowledging Ankalaev’s victory, White also praised Pereira’s caliber as a champion and suggested an immediate rematch is probable. “Probably a rematch,” White stated.
Leading up to the fight, questions arose regarding Pereira’s activities outside of training camp. His trip to Australia to support Sean Strickland at UFC 312 and participation in promotional events sparked concerns.
UFC veterans Daniel Cormier and Matt Brown voiced worries about Pereira’s focus being divided before a significant challenge like Ankalaev.
White acknowledged the difficulty for fighters to maintain peak dedication after achieving stardom and financial success. He noted that new opportunities and distractions often emerge.
“It’s definitely a question for Pereira to answer,” White said about potential distractions. He recognized Pereira’s busy schedule but reiterated the known challenge Ankalaev presented.
“Everyone knew Ankalaev would be a tough opponent, possibly the biggest test of his career,” White emphasized.
Regardless of Pereira’s preparation, White credited Ankalaev’s performance and winning strategy. He emphasized that Ankalaev executed a plan to defeat Pereira.
Although the fight might not have been a thrilling spectacle, White highlighted Ankalaev’s pressure and determination, which ultimately led to his unanimous decision victory over Pereira after five rounds.
“I wouldn’t diminish Ankalaev’s performance and the pressure he applied,” White concluded. He mentioned hearing Pereira’s corner urging him to be more aggressive in the final round, indicating Ankalaev’s control throughout the fight.
