Dalton Smith is set to return to his hometown ring on April 19, where he will compete against Canada’s Mathieu Germain at the Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield. Smith, boasting an undefeated record of 17 wins with 13 knockouts, is coming off a dominant first-round victory over Walid Ouizza in Nottingham, where he secured the European super-lightweight title.
This fight is significant for the 28-year-old Smith as he is now the mandatory challenger for the WBC title. A win against Germain is crucial to keep him on track for a potential championship fight against current WBC champion Alberto Puello.
Puello recently defended his title with a close decision victory over Sandor Martin, following a previous win against Gary Antuanne Russell, demonstrating his strong form in the division.
Smith stated, “I had a fantastic start to the year by winning the European Title impressively, and now, as the WBC mandatory challenger, I want to stay active. Mathieu Germain is coming to win, but I am determined to get the job done. He stands between me and major opportunities. I’m focused on Germain, but after this fight, I will have a message for Alberto Puello!”
Germain, with a record of 26 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, is a seasoned 35-year-old fighter. While both of his losses were by stoppage, he is currently on an eight-fight winning streak since 2020. Notably, Germain has a victory over Steve Claggett, who has challenged for the WBO title, showcasing his capability at a high level.
Germain commented, “I am a boxer who thrives on challenges, and Dalton is definitely one. I have dedicated my life to moments like this!”
In addition to the main event, the undercard will feature Matchroom’s latest signing, Josh Padley, who recently stepped in to fight Shakur Stevenson. Former featherweight champion Josh Warrington will also be making his return, and Ishmael Davis and Ryan Kelly will face off in a British super-welterweight title eliminator. Giorgio Visioli will fight Kane Baker, and Leli Buttigieg and Joe Howarth are also scheduled for separate bouts.
