Dalton Smith Addresses WBC Mandatory Status and Adam Azim’s Challenge
Dalton Smith is maintaining a level-headed approach to his recent appointment as the WBC super lightweight world title mandatory challenger. The Sheffield-based boxer acknowledges the significance of this status but remains focused on his ultimate goal of becoming world champion.
Smith’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, officially announced the news last week. The current WBC champion, Albert Puello, is set to defend his title against Sandor Martin on March 1 in Brooklyn. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has stated that the winner of this bout will be allowed one voluntary defense before facing Smith as the mandatory challenger.
In an interview with Boxing News, Smith downplayed the importance of his new status, stating, “It’s just a position. I’ll only be satisfied when I’m wearing the world champion’s belt. I’m grateful to my team for securing this mandatory spot, but it’s just a step towards the ultimate goal.”
Looking ahead, Smith expressed his desire to return to the ring in late April. He emphasized the importance of facing a challenging opponent to prepare him for future world title fights.
Smith’s last appearance in the ring was a decisive victory, claiming the European 140lbs title with a first-round knockout of Walid Ouizza. This win marked his 17th professional victory and ended a 10-month hiatus from competition.
When asked about recent comments made by his UK rival Adam Azim, who recently defeated former world champion Sergey Lipinets, Smith responded with sarcasm, saying, “Oh, I’m terrified,” clearly unfazed by Azim’s challenge.
