Sports news ยป Charles Oliveira Not Focused on Paddy Pimblett, Wants ‘Great Fight’ with Ilia Topuria

Former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira has dismissed the idea of fighting Paddy Pimblett, despite Pimblett mentioning his name as a potential opponent after UFC 314. Oliveira is currently focused on fights that will bring him closer to reclaiming the lightweight title.

In a recent interview, Oliveira explained that he isn`t considering a fight with Pimblett at this stage. He acknowledged Pimblett`s win over Michael Chandler at UFC 314, noting Pimblett`s effective strategy and suggesting Chandler might have returned too soon after a previous leg injury.

Oliveira stated his priority is to fight for the championship belt, making fights against lower-ranked opponents like Pimblett irrelevant to his current goals. He recognizes Pimblett as a rising and skilled fighter but emphasized his own focus is on contenders ranked above him. Oliveira understands fighters calling out higher-ranked opponents as a way to climb the ranks, admitting he used similar tactics earlier in his career. While acknowledging a fight with Pimblett could be exciting, Oliveira believes it doesn`t align with his immediate aspirations.

The lightweight division`s title picture is currently unclear, with champion Islam Makhachev seemingly waiting to see the outcome of a welterweight fight at UFC 315 before deciding his next move. Ilia Topuria has also entered the title conversation after moving up from featherweight.

Initially, Oliveira had considered only two options: a title fight with Makhachev or a “BMF” title fight against Max Holloway. However, he now indicates a willingness to fight Topuria under specific circumstances.

Oliveira reiterated his primary goal is to regain the lightweight belt. He had considered the “BMF” fight when it seemed Makhachev would be unavailable until October, hoping to compete at International Fight Week. However, Makhachev`s potential earlier return changed Oliveira`s plans, shifting his focus away from Holloway. The current title situation remains uncertain.

Oliveira clarified that while his priority is the title, he is not afraid to face any opponent. He expressed respect for all potential contenders, including Topuria, and is confident in his ability to dictate the fight. He is open to fighting Topuria, especially if it`s for a title opportunity, and stressed he wants a direct path to the championship without taking unnecessary detour fights.

Oliveira suggested a potential interim lightweight title fight against Topuria if Makhachev decides to pursue the welterweight belt. He emphasized his respect for Topuria, acknowledging his accomplishments in the featherweight division, including wins over notable fighters, and recognizing him as a formidable opponent in the lightweight class.
