Celtic vs Bayern Munich: Scottish champions aim to upset German giants in Champions League clash
Celtic are set for a monumental night at Parkhead as they host Bayern Munich in the Champions League knockout stages. This marks Celtic’s first appearance in the knockout rounds since 2013, when Neil Lennon was manager.
While both clubs dominate their domestic leagues, Bayern’s European pedigree far outweighs Celtic’s with six Champions League titles to Celtic’s one. However, manager Brendan Rodgers believes his side can trouble the German champions.
“Bayern Munich are true European football royalty,” Rodgers stated. “For us to be challenging them shows how far we’ve come. If we combine our improved physicality and running power with the energy from our supporters, anything is possible.”
Celtic remain unbeaten at home this season across all competitions. While Bayern presents their toughest test yet, Rodgers has praised his players’ mental fortitude and confidence is high in the squad.
The return of winger Daizen Maeda from suspension provides a boost for Celtic. Maeda has 21 goals this season including 3 in the Champions League group stage. January signings Jota and Adam Idah also give Rodgers additional attacking options.
When the teams last met in 2017, Bayern won both group stage matches. But with the Parkhead crowd behind them, Celtic will believe they can produce a famous European night and upset the odds to reach the last 16.
